Project Overview
Bellevue Lighting had the exciting opportunity to design the lighting for ILEA Seattle’s Halloween 2022 event, which embraced a thrilling Stranger Things theme. Held at Showbox Sodo and planned by Wilkinson Events, the event required lighting that would immerse attendees in the eerie, upside-down world of the hit series while maintaining a lively party atmosphere. Our team took on the challenge of creating a lighting setup that amplified the supernatural theme while transforming Showbox Sodo into a dynamic and engaging venue.
Design Concept
The Stranger Things theme inspired us to create a dark, mysterious, and otherworldly atmosphere throughout the venue. From the glowing neon effects to the haunting ambiance, the lighting was designed to evoke the iconic scenes from the show while ensuring that the space was functional for a large-scale event. We had to blend thematic elements with practical lighting to deliver both an immersive experience and a successful party setup.
Lighting Solution
To bring this design concept to life, we utilized the following equipment:
- LED Neon Tubes: These neon tubes provided glowing, eerie light reminiscent of the sci-fi world of Stranger Things. We used them throughout the venue to create the signature red and blue color palettes, adding to the show’s moody and supernatural feel.
- Bistro Lights: Strung throughout key areas, these lights added a warm, vintage atmosphere to certain parts of the venue, blending the 1980s nostalgia from the show with the fun party vibe of the event.
- Skyboxes: These lighting elements allowed us to create dramatic overhead lighting effects, adding depth to the venue and further immersing guests in the Stranger Things aesthetic.
- Onsite Lighting Design: We also assisted in designing the lighting layout and helped coordinate the placement and integration of the onsite equipment to match the theme and requirements of the event.

Addressing Unique Challenges
One of the challenges of this event was balancing the Stranger Things theme with practical event lighting needs. The venue had to maintain enough light for guests to navigate the space while retaining the dark, ominous feel of the Stranger Things world. Using our neon tubes and skyboxes, we were able to provide atmospheric lighting without sacrificing functionality. Additionally, working within the unique structure of Showbox Sodo required strategic fixture placement to ensure that the entire venue was covered with a cohesive design.
